Itinerary

The San Rafael Glacier

This Chilean National Park was declared to be a worldwide reserve by UNESCO in 1979. Located at latitude 46 – 45 south of the Chilean Patagonia it is 1,242,000 hectares of millenary beauty. A Spanish navigator discovered this place four centuries ago. Today it has become one of the natural splendors of Chile, of the greatest international importance. The ice of the San Rafael Glacier date back as far as 300,000 years, its frontal face is 2kms wide and its ice towers reach up to more than 75 mts. and plunges down into the ocean waters more than 230 meters. It has a length of and stems from the San Valentín Nevado of the Southern Ice Fields of the Los Andes Mountains. The blues of the ice and its constant avalanches have converted this natural spectacle into international fame. With its ice floes of different shapes and colors it is a spectacle that is unique in this world.
There are also excursions on the fjord's quiet, transparent waters in safe motorboats, where you are shown the rich marine fauna, such as the banks of mussels and the playful southern dolphins. 
Sailing every Saturday from Puerto Montt, a city located 1000 kilometers (620 mi.) south of Santiago, to the San Rafael Glacier, the majestic relic of the planet's last glaciation, Skorpios carries you on a Dream Cruise of six days and five nights. Its goes through spectacular channels and archipelagos, where an exuberant nature stands out in all its splendor and man's presence is barely perceptible, and where softly shaped islands are scattered in the ocean. We will visit isolated and picturesque fishing villages and settlements, such as Puerto Aguirre and Queilen, the city of Castro, the Quitralco fjord with its thermal baths and the San Rafael National Park, which was declared world biosphere reserve by the UNESCO with its Glacier of magical and spectacular 30,000 years old ice that rises in multicolored towers to a height of more than seventy meters and then sinks into the ocean.

The M/V Skorpios II has capacity for 160 passengers, its cabins are fully equipped and decorated, all have private bathrooms, background music, intercoms and television. It also has the Quitralco saloon (smokers), the San Rafael bar (non-smokers) and a main dining room.

 

ITINERARY

Saturday:
12:00 hrs. Departure from Skorpios Terminal in Puerto Montt. Navigation through the Llanquihue Archipelago. Sighting of the city of Calbuco. Crossing the Gulf of Ancud. 16:30 hrs. Landing in Quemchi, on the island of Chiloé. Disembark in boats in this picturesque Chiloé town, where you can visit its handicraft center, its streets and cafes, as well as the house museum of the Chilean writer Francisco Coloane. 18:30 hrs. We continue south through the Chiloé archipelago, crossing the Corcovado Gulf at midnight.

Sunday:

08:00 hrs. Navigation through Moraleda and Ferronave channels. Arrival at Puerto Aguirre at 11:00 hrs. Disembarkation in this fishing village located in the Chonos archipelago, we will walk through its streets, viewpoints and the path of a typical rainforest of the region. 13:30 hrs. Navigation through Ferronave, Pilcomayo and Casma channels. 16.00 hrs. Arrival to Islote Barrientos. Here we will disembark in boats approaching stealthily to this group of rocky islands and visit this place where there is the largest number of seabirds in the region of Aysen to see birds such as Imperial Cormorants and liles, Austral and Dominican Gulls, accompanied by sea lions of two hairs that are on the rocks or in the sea. 17:00 hrs. Sail southbound, anchoring at 22:00 hrs approximately in Caleta Quesahuen or Punta Leopardos, 20 miles from San Rafael Glacier.

Monday:
07:30 hrs. The ship crosses the San Rafael inlet and Canal Témpanos. 09:00 hrs. Enter the lagoon and anchor 2 kms from the glacier. Motor boat excursion among multicolored icebergs, weather permitting. 14:30 hrs. The ship approaches the glacier. 16:00 hrs. Departure to Quitralco Fjord.

Tuesday:
08:00 hrs. Docking at the Quitralco dock. After breakfast, passengers may take thermal baths at 32° and 38°C, in indoor or outdoor pools and hikes along the local trails. If weather conditions permit, motor boat excursions are made in the interior of the fjord. 17:00 hrs. Sailing to Chiloé through Moraleda and Pérez Norte channels.

Wednesday:
 00:15 hrs. Sailing through Leucayec Channel. Crossing the Corcovado Gulf at 05:30 hrs approximately. In this area, if the conditions allow it, we will have the possibility of seeing Blue whales or Alfaguaras. We continue sailing and bordering the eastern coast of Chiloé, arriving at 11:00 hrs to Islote Conejos, located in Queilen channel. Disembark for a motor boat ride around this small island where Magellanic penguins and numerous birds of the area live. 13:00 hrs. We set sail sailing between Lemuy and Chelín islands. 16:30 hrs. Arrival at Dalcahue, disembark and visit the place, we recommend its handicraft fair, the church and its promenade along the waterfront. 23:00 hrs. Sailing to Puerto Montt. Farewell party, Captain's dinner.

Thursday:
08:00 hrs. Breakfast docked at Skorpios Terminal. 09:00 hrs. Disembarkation and transfer of passengers. End of our services
