Inside of Atacama Desert, the driest in the world, where the hills rise in a spectacular geography of multiple forms and the sun is hidden alter an impressive color spectacle; The Kimal Hotel is a labyrinth of volcanic stone and mud, located in the downtown of San Pedro de Atacama, few steps from the main square. History The idea of the hotel emerged from the meeting of two different perspectives of this most remarkable spot on the Herat through the blue eyes of someone to whom the beauty of the desert oasis was a discovery and brown eyes of someone to whom that beauty was home. In 1992 the young Anglo Chilean partnership approached a Chilean professor of architecture, specialist in adobe building, with a daring idea, to design a comfortable hotel using the traditional atacamanian building materials associated up until then in Chile with the poverty of the marginalized indigenous people. The shared inspiration was to create a space for tourists visiting San Pedro to really live the experience under a roof of cane and gnarled and knotted beams within walls of sunbaked clay like the timeless constructions that seems to rise up part of the earth they stand on like the clay sculptures in the desert shaped by the hand on time. In 1994, the fusion of the perspectives o fan architect whose passion is still atacamanian architecture, an English woman, full of the illusion and inspiration of her youthful years and a talented and ambitious local artisian, potter sculptor jeweler, of then emerging entrepreneurial potential, made possible the creation of a beautifully distributed space composed of harmonious and finely executed buildings using ancient techniques hand crafted adobe bricks, volcanic stone, tree trunks, taking care to cater for the real needs and sensitivities of the European guest.
