Chile's salt flats

Its territory reminds us of lunar landscapes, with extensions of kilometers and kilometers with nothing but the white immensity of the salt that blends with the horizon. A salt flat is an evaporated lake, where salts predominate. They are usually found in the high plateaus, especially in the South American altiplano, in the north of the continent. This territory belongs to southwestern Bolivia, northeastern Chile and northwestern Argentina. That is why we share some salt flats with our neighboring countries. 1.- Atacama Salt Flat: The Atacama Salt Flat extends for 3000 kilometers. It is the third largest in the world and its characteristics allow the existence of animal and plant life, as we can see in the Los Flamencos National Reserve, which is located northwest of the salt flat. In this area we not only find flamingos, but also other birds such as rheas, ducks, as well as llamas, alpacas and guanacos.

Surire Salt Flat: It is located in Putre, I region of Arica and Parinacota, and has an extension of more than 17 thousand hectares. It is located at an altitude of over 4200 meters above sea level. It is considered a natural monument due to the presence of unique fauna such as rheas, also known as suris, as well as camelids and three species of flamingos.

Salar de Coipasa: This salt flat is part of Bolivia and Chile, belonging to the Tarapacá region in the Chilean area. This salt flat has the particularity to surround the Coipasa Lake and also connect with the Uyuni Salt Flat, located in Bolivia.

Salar de Maricunga: It is located in Copiapó, 180 kilometers to the northeast, with an extension of more than 3700 meters above sea level. In its interior inhabit birds such as flamingos and parinas especially in the sector of the Santa Rosa salt lake, within the Nevado Tres Cruces National Park.

5.- Tara Salt Flat: This salt flat is located in the Antofagasta Region, 150 kilometers east of San Pedro de Atacama. It is also part of the Los Flamencos National Reserve and shares with it the characteristic of a rich flora and fauna, including vicuñas, flamingos, culpeo foxes, guinea pigs, ducks and seagulls. Among the plant species we can find coirón and bofedales.
