Crossing in the Glaciers
One of these places is the Bernardo O`Higgins National Park, which is characterized by its large extensions of ice and for being the starting point for navigations to the glaciers.
Bernardo O`Higgins National Park is the largest park in Chile. Its territory covers the regions of Aysén and Magallanes, and in its interior we find the Southern Ice Field, where the famous Pio XI glacier is located, which is also the largest in the southern hemisphere without being in Antarctica.
In addition to the Pio XI glacier, in the Bernardo O'Higgins Park we will discover the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers. To reach these glaciers you must sail from Puerto Natales to the northwest, through the Señoret Channel. Throughout the journey, you can observe various representatives of marine fauna such as dolphins, sea lions, cormorants, and even condors. We will be able to observe the Balmaceda glacier from the same boat, since it is located on the east shore of Mount Balmaceda, with an altitude of approximately 2000 meters. On its slopes we find the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers.
To reach the Serrano glacier, you must disembark in Puerto Toro and take a beautiful hike through a native forest on the banks of the channel. This way you can reach the foot of this impressive glacier and take pictures from a closer distance. Part of Campos de Hielo Sur, but also reaching the western territory of Torres del Paine National Park, we discovered the Grey Glacier. It is more than 30 meters high and 6 kilometers wide, with a bluish and grayish color, which gives it a unique and moving image.
