What are Chile’s Fiestas Patrias?

Fiestas Patrias commemorate the beginning of Chile’s independence. Throughout September, cities are filled with ramadas and fondas offering music, food, and unique traditions.

It’s a cultural experience like no other. International tourists enjoy the cueca, the national dance, and traditional dishes such as empanadas and grilled meats. The festive atmosphere makes September the perfect time to discover Chile’s essence. This year, celebrations will take place from Thursday, September 18th, through Sunday, September 21st. Keep in mind that during these dates many shops and retailers close, as September 18th and 19th are mandatory public holidays. Plan your week accordingly!

Ramadas and fondas: the heart of September

In every Chilean city, fondas bring together live music, traditional food stalls, and popular games. They are the true heart of the national celebration.

Here, you can try the famous “terremoto”, a sweet and refreshing drink, while enjoying folk performances and live music.
Some fondas are free to enter, while others charge an entrance fee that usually ranges between 10 and 20 USD (10,000–20,000 CLP).
Most venues have large parking areas, restrooms, and public transportation available throughout the night. Note that many places only accept cash, although some also take cards. Keep that in mind!

Destination 1: Santiago de Chile

In Santiago, Parque O’Higgins hosts the capital’s largest celebration. It is one of the biggest ramadas in the country, where you’ll find everything: handicrafts, food stalls, live shows, Chilean music groups, folklore, cueca dancing, games, and more.

Destination 2: La Pampilla Festival

About six hours north of Santiago, in the Coquimbo Region, the traditional Fiesta de La Pampilla is held. It is considered one of Chile’s largest and most renowned celebrations, attracting nearly 500,000 people each year.

During the festivities, visitors can explore large gastronomic fairs, featuring dishes ranging from empanadas and anticuchos to fresh seafood typical of the area. The festival’s stages host well-known national and international artists, offering live concerts in a variety of styles.

Destination 3: Valparaíso Region

The Valparaíso Region becomes a hub of unique celebrations during Fiestas Patrias. From massive fondas to smaller traditional festivals, every city offers its own mix of music, food, and local traditions. In Viña del Mar, the Sporting Club will be filled with food stalls and live shows for the traditional “Fiesta Criolla”, one of the area’s most popular events.

In Valparaíso, Parque Alejo Barrios in Playa Ancha hosts fondas full of music and local cuisine, attracting both Chilean and international visitors. Villa Alemana also announced a fonda, while Los Andes will once again host the famous “El Guatón Loyola” festival in its urban park. Other towns choose smaller but equally vibrant celebrations. In Puchuncaví, the “Fiesta Costumbrista en la Medialuna” highlights local traditions, while in Putaendo, the “Gran Fiesta Huasa Sahondé” will fill Parque El Huaso with folklore and flavor.
