Experience trekking in Easter Island
To travel to this island is to enter into the magic of the Rapa Nui culture and in the middle of the Pacific Ocean discover the secrets it has to teach us.
While you can choose this destination to rest and relax in a paradisiacal environment, Easter Island is also the ideal place for trekking lovers. In its more than 160 square kilometers we can find several trails to explore either walking, 4x4 or horseback riding ... Here is a small guide on how to make the most of your stay if you are ready for adventure and trekking on Easter Island.
Trekking in Easter Island: In Easter Island there are several trekking alternatives, depending on their duration and difficulty. One of the main ones is the route from Hanga Roa to Anakena beach, which allows you to visit the cemetery of Easter Island, pass through the Ahu de Tahai and reach Ana Kavenga - better known as the Cavern of the Two Windows - with stunning views of the sea. Then the road goes around the Terevaka volcano in its coastal area, discovering other ceremonial centers such as the Ahu Maikati Te Moa and the Ahu Vai Mata, until reaching the Ahu Nau Nau, near the beach of Anakena. Its crystal clear waters and white sands will be your reward after the effort.
Another interesting route is to get from Hanga Roa to the top of the Terevaka volcano. The trail starts at the church of Hanga Roa going north, where we can find some interesting places like Ana Te Pahu and Ana Katenga- amazing caves that you can visit. Then you must follow the trail to the summit, it does not have too much slope so the ascent can be done in about 3 hours. You can also trek from Hanga Roa to the Rano Kau volcano. This trail begins at the Father Englert Archaeological Museum, where you can also discover more about the Rapa Nui culture, with exhibits of representative objects and the history not only of this people, but also of other ethnic groups of Polynesia.
The tour continues to the Ahu de Tahai, where we find three ceremonial centers, the Ahu de Vai Uri, the Ahu Ko Te Riku - where the moai with eyes and hat is located - and the Ahu de Tahai itself. Then our trail takes us to the Tahai Cemetery, which overlooks the sea. This route allows us to visit various sites of interest such as the Hanga Roa or Tai Cove, one of the most important of Easter Island, and where you can go diving. Also the Ahu Mamara Nui and the Motu Taka Rua, which allows us to observe the waves breaking between the islets, called motu. In this place is also very common artisanal fishing.
Moving forward we will reach the bay and pier of Hanga Piko, with beautiful coastal scenery. A few meters away is another cavern, Ana O`hono, and also the Ahu Riata. Near the airport of Mataveri we find the cavern Ana Kai Tangata, very relevant in the ritual of Tangata Manu. Here you can see cave paintings depicting birds of the area and was the construction space of the boats sewn vaka ama.
From Ana Kai Tangata we can continue to the Ahu Rei Inga Peta, a ceremonial center and also to the Manavai, circular structures made for agriculture. At this point we are close to the crater of Rano Kau and the surrounding landscape offers impressive cliffs. On the southwestern slope we can discover the Ceremonial Village of Orongo.
Arriving at the crater we can observe its interesting microclimate, which allows the growth of different plant species in its interior. This crater also corresponds to one of the most important water reserves of Easter Island. There is another trekking trail to the Poike volcano, at the eastern end of Easter Island, which is why it is known as the place where the night ends. It is the oldest volcano on Easter Island and thus, its crater is dry, being the habitat of a eucalyptus forest. Its landscape also has steep cliffs.
One of its main attractions is the area of the Maunga Vai A Heva, a carved head of 3 meters, with a large mouth that was used for water collection, which some even attributed magical powers such as eternal youth. It has other secrets, such as the cavern Ana or Keke, located in one of the cliffs of the place. Easter Island can be a hiking paradise. Remember that the climate, being semi-tropical, is characterized by its unpredictability. Don't forget to bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, as well as a windbreaker in case of an unexpected drizzle. Enjoy!
