What Is Heritage Day?

First things first: what is Chile’s Heritage Day? It’s a nationwide celebration dedicated to the country’s cultural heritage. It takes place on the last weekend of May (May 24–25) and invites you to discover Chile’s historical, architectural, and cultural treasures. This special date was established in 1999 by Chile’s Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage.

Why Is It Important to Chile?

This day is all about strengthening national identity and encouraging civic participation. If you’re traveling with your family, it’s also a great opportunity for children to connect with Chilean history and culture in a fun and engaging way.

Over the weekend, you’ll be able to visit museums, libraries, palaces, and iconic neighborhoods. It’s a rich and inspiring experience that promotes cultural tourism in cities like La Serena, Iquique, Santiago, Valparaíso, Concepción, and many more.

When and Where Is Heritage Day Celebrated?

Heritage Day is celebrated across Chile, from Arica in the north to Punta Arenas in the south, on May 24 and 25. More than 3,000 public and private spaces open their doors for you to explore—whether you’re a tourist or a local resident.

You’ll have the chance to take part in over 3,000 events: guided tours, concerts, workshops, talks, exhibitions, theater performances, heritage walks, and culinary experiences. Here are five cities with standout cultural programs—take note!

Santiago de Chile

If you're in the capital, don’t miss its 500+ activities. You can visit La Moneda Palace, the National Museum of Fine Arts, or the National Library. We also recommend exploring the historic neighborhoods of Yungay and Lastarria, full of culture and charm.

Valparaíso

Explore the famous hills of Valparaíso on guided walks through Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción. Visit the National Maritime Museum and La Sebastiana, the former home of poet Pablo Neruda. You’ll enjoy the color, architecture, and stunning views of this iconic port city.

Viña del Mar

Viña del Mar welcomes you with a diverse schedule of events. You can take guided tours of the Santa Inés Cemetery and the Municipal Theater. At the Palacio Rioja Museum, enjoy watercolor and printmaking workshops, along with a performance by the Viña del Mar Folk Ballet.

You can also visit the Ariztía Palace, Valle Palace, Museum of Decorative Arts, and the Presidential Residence at Cerro Castillo (advance registration required). Plus, the Quinta Vergara Amphitheater will host a special audiovisual exhibition about the Viña del Mar International Song Festival.

Concepción

If you're visiting Concepción, don’t miss the Casa del Arte at the University of Concepción and its iconic mural “Presence of Latin America.” You’ll also enjoy folk performances and historic walking tours through downtown. The Pedro del Río Zañartu Museum offers free visits that connect you with local history.

La Serena

In the Coquimbo region, La Serena invites you to explore its Cathedral, the Archaeological Museum, and historic city center. Take part in traditional crafts workshops, photo exhibitions, and tastings of local products—perfect if you love heritage and gastronomy.

In the south, Puerto Montt will surprise you with tours of historic churches, food fairs, and exhibits on Indigenous cultures. The Juan Pablo II Museum and Diego Rivera Theater will feature special events just for you. Don’t miss a walk along the waterfront or talks about local history.
