Magical snowy forest in the Huilo Huilo Reserve
Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve located in the Region of Los Rios, within the commune of Panguipulli. It has a lush forest with all kinds of tree species, some centenarians, belonging to the Patagonian forest, and also the greatest biodiversity of ferns in continental Chile.
It has more than 100 thousand hectares where you can find ecosystems as diverse as lakes of glacial origin, volcanic terrain on the slopes of the Mocho-Choschuenco volcano, waterfalls, rivers, forests, hot springs and hotels of whimsical architecture that blend with the environment.
This particular landscape was produced by the natural isolation of the Valdivian region, which allowed the development of species of flora and fauna unique in the world, with animals as particular as the small pudúes, the guiñas felines and the monito del monte, the smallest marsupial on the planet. During the winter, this thick forest is covered with a blanket of snow providing a magical spectacle. The whiteness of the environment, contrasting with the evergreen leaves of the so-called cathedral forest, due to its height of over 40 meters, allows visitors to enter a unique landscape, with the possibility of walking through its interpretation trails and horseback riding.
One of them is the Sendero de la Leona, which also connects with the Sendero de los Espíritus. It is a trail of only 500 meters that goes deep into the native forest until it reaches the imposing waterfall La Leona. Another trail you can walk is the one that is next to the Truful River also through a forest and takes you to the road where you can discover the Huilo Huilo waterfall and the jump of the Puma, other major attractions of the reserve. In addition to these trails, there are other routes inside the park of greater length to go into the woods and meet various species of trees and plants, such as the Botanical Trail and the Path of Magnetic Stones. We recommend that you always walk these trails with a guide who knows the area and with whom you can learn about the unique flora and fauna that inhabit the reserve.
During the winter you can enjoy multiple activities on the slopes of the Mocho Choschuenco volcano. Among them, snowshoeing and sledding in the middle of the forest is one of the most entertaining for children. Other tours include a ride on a Pisten Bully, a vehicle that allows you to climb the slopes of the volcano up to 1200 meters where you will enjoy a great view of the surroundings, with Lake Pirihueico in the background. On the slopes of the Mocho Choshuenco volcano there are also slopes for skiing and snowboarding lovers to do their activities. There is even the possibility of off-piste skiing on the slopes of the volcano. The complex has an entertaining toboggan for tubing and a delicious cafeteria where you can recharge your batteries. It is worth noting that this reserve promotes sustainable tourism, integrating the surrounding communities in different jobs and preserving the development of local traditions, which can be seen in its delicious local cuisine and various traditional fairs, especially in Neltumé some times of the year.
To reach the Reserve Huilo Huilo you can go from Panguipulli to Paso Hua Hum. Before Neltume find the signposted access to one of the entrances to the park, the Portal Huilo Huilo. Remember that the reserve borders Argentina and across Lake Pirihueico can reach San Martin de los Andes, on the Argentine side, another beautiful place surrounded by the purest Patagonian nature.
