Puerto Montt: Nature, archeology and lakes

The capital of the Los Lagos Region offers multiple natural attractions for its visitors. In fact, in Puerto Montt we find the kilometer 0 of the Carretera Austral, so it is considered the gateway to the Chilean Patagonia.

The city of Puerto Montt has the characteristic charm of a port, as well as all the necessary tourist and commercial services such as hotels, casino, mall, restaurants and bars. The Angelmó cove - located 2 kilometers from the city's Plaza de Armas - has an interesting fish and seafood market, as well as beautiful handicraft stalls where you can buy a souvenir of the area.

From Puerto Montt we can access the Chacao Channel, which connects the city with the archipelago of Chiloé, so you can take tours to Chiloé. It also connects with other cities further south such as Coyhaique, Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas, through Argentina, by ferries and barges.

Puerto Montt is also the starting point to other interesting destinations in the surrounding area, such as the beautiful city of Puerto Varas. The whole area has great natural areas, so we can visit national parks, forests, lakes and volcanoes. We invite you to discover some of them:

Monte Verde: 30 kilometers west of Puerto Montt we can find one of the largest archaeological sites in Chile. In this place prehistoric remains dating back more than 14 thousand years were discovered, including stone arrowheads, mastodon bones, hides, plants, remains of wood, ropes and other elements of daily life, in a surprisingly good state of preservation.

According to the investigations, the remains found would belong to indigenous groups of the south like kaweskar, huilliches and tehuelches. You can find them in the same site of more than 9 hectares in size, or in the Monte Verde Archaeological Museum, located in Puerto Montt.

Alerce Andino National Park: This protected natural reserve is located 46 kilometers from the city of Puerto Montt, on the border with the commune of Cochamó. This area is part of the Southern Andes Temperate Rainforest Biosphere Reserve.

There are more than 39 thousand hectares of forests and nature, where we find some lakes like Montana, Chilco and Fría and some hills like Cuadrado, Negro and Cuife. But its greatest attraction is undoubtedly the larch trees of more than 40 meters high and a millenary age.

These incredible specimens cover more than half of the reserve, which also has other specimens of evergreen trees such as canelo, coigue, mañío and lenga, as well as a large number of native fauna, including pudú, puma, foxes, condors, peucos, trout, among many others. In the surroundings of the Alerce Andino Park there are other attractions such as Lake Chapo, the Reloncaví Sound, the Calbuco volcano and the hot springs of Sotomó.

Hornopirén National Park: It is located approximately 107 kilometers from Puerto Montt, accessed through the Carretera Austral. To get there you must cross the Seno de Reloncaví in one of the ferries that allows the transfer between Caleta La Arena and Caleta Puelche.

This park also belongs to the Temperate Rainforest Biosphere Reserve of the Austral Andes. In its interior we can discover native larch forests and other evergreen species such as lenga, ulmo and tepa, making it an important habitat for the fauna of the area such as black woodpeckers, condors, pumas and guiñas. In Hornopirén one of the main attractions is the General Pinto Concha Lake, which offers beautiful scenery, camping areas with bathrooms and drinking water, and several hiking trails, but of high difficulty because most are uphill. Some of the most attractive are the Sendero de los Gigantes - in the middle of an alerce forest - and the Mirador Volcán Yates trail.

Hornopirén National Park is one of the least intervened places in the area, so you can enjoy nature in its natural state. Because of the long distances and access, it is recommended to take advantage of a couple of days of disconnection and relaxation inside this park.
