Scientific Tourism in Chile: 5 destinations
If your passion is science and discovering incredible places, don't miss the chance to visit these places in Chile:
1.- Los Dedos Paleontological Park, Caldera: This is the first paleontological park in Chile. It is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of the fossil remains found in the Cerro Ballena paleontological site, where fossils from the Jurassic period were found, including the largest whale skull discovered in South America, dating back 10 million years.
Caldera is located 75 kilometers northwest of Copiapó. You can get there by air from Santiago or by traveling 882 kilometers overland along Route 5 north, in very good condition.
El Tatio Geothermal Complex: It is the highest geyser field in the world, located at 4200 meters above sea level. It is also the largest group of geysers in the Southern Hemisphere and the third largest in the world. It has approximately 80 geysers, with water that emerges at 86º Celsius, the boiling point of water at the altitude at which they are located. They are located inside volcanic rocks and their heat source is probably magma. To get to El Tatio, you can start your adventure in San Pedro de Atacama - located 63 kilometers away - and acclimatize for a few days due to the altitude. From there you can take the Chiu-Chiu/Géysersdel Tatio route, until you reach the geothermal field, approximately 80 kilometers away.
3.- Del Pangue Observatory: It is located 17 kilometers south of Vicuña, in the IV region of Coquimbo. Here you will find the largest public telescope in Chile and there is no light pollution, since the only structures that exist in the area are observatories. It is one of the best places for astrophotography. To get to the Observatory you must start your trip in Vicuña, 63 kilometers from La Serena. You can choose one of the programs to visit it, which includes a half-hour drive to the observatory.
Kutralkura Geopark: A geopark is a well-defined area significant for its geological interest and biodiversity. This is the first geopark in Chile and includes within it several national reserves, including Conguillío National Park, Malacahuello National Reserve, Nalcas National Reserve, Tolhuaca National Park, China Muerta National Reserve and Villarrica National Reserve. Each of these areas offers unique landscapes of great beauty and all kinds of attractions, from lakes, volcanoes, hot springs, forests, trails, and much more. To get there you must travel to the Araucanía Region and access through any of the reserves that are part of the geopark. Kutralkura, in Mapudungun means "stone of fire".
Laguna San Rafael: Chile's Biosphere Reserve, its landscape offers a unique beauty of Patagonian channels and glaciers. In its particular geography of fjords and snowdrifts there is a large amount of marine fauna such as black-necked swans, chungungos, albatrosses and sea lions, among others. The spectacle of the detachment of glaciers is a unique experience that you can live while sailing through the Chilean Patagonia. To get there, you must take the route from Coyhaique and then to Laguna San Rafael National Park.
