September and Fiestas Patrias in Chile
Not only are we enjoying pleasant temperatures and sunny but not too warm days, but also spring is coming and the trees are full of flowers. In addition to all of this, on the 18th and 19th we celebrate our Fiestas Patrias, so we have a lot of events to enjoy this month all over Chile.
It is a good opportunity to discover more of the popular culture of our country, even if you are Chilean. You can enjoy our exquisite gastronomy, tasting meat empanadas, "terremotos" (a drink prepared with pipeño wine, pineapple ice cream and a splash of fernet), sopaipillas, pebre and other homemade and traditional foods. You can also discover samples of handicrafts, learn to dance popular dances such as "cueca brava or chora" and visit parks and squares full of activities during this month. Here are some of the emblematic places where you can fully live this September with its spring, its panoramas and its Fiestas Patrias:
1.- Olmue: Olmue is considered the "Folkloric Capital of Chile". It is located in the V region, approximately 40 kilometers away from Santiago. Here you will find all kinds of activities for Fiestas Patrias, from gastronomic festivals to Creole games.
Olmue also has the attraction of La Campana Park, which has a native forest, diverse fauna such as hummingbirds, woodpeckers, snakes, among others. When you reach the top of the mountain La Campana, you can see an incredible view of the hills, Valparaiso and the sea on the horizon.
2.- Valparaíso: The popular port of the V region has a wide range of activities to celebrate this Fiestas Patrias and enjoy September. Especially in the Alejo Barrios park where all the fondas are located, places full of music and traditional gastronomy to enjoy. There is also a traditional carnival and folkloric dances.
In the Caleta el Membrillo every year the famous Fogata del Pescador is held, where hake is consumed and music and food are enjoyed around a large communal fire.
Concepción: In Concepción there are also entertaining activities for these festivities. Every year the celebrations move to the Jorge Alessandri Park, which has an area of 11 hectares and has educational and trekking trails, native forest and large green areas where games, workshops, typical dances and food stalls are held.
As this park has a nursery, the copihue, our national flower, is one of the main attractions of this festival.
Coquimbo: In Coquimbo the famous Fiesta de la Pampilla is held every September, a tradition that has been maintained since colonial times.
In the area of La Pampilla there are fondas and ramadas, where you can enjoy delicious Chilean cuisine such as empanadas and chicha, with space for dancing and where there are also performances by artists, contests and sporting events.
5.- Santiago: In our capital in different communes there are activities to celebrate September and the Fiestas Patrias. Some of the most famous are the fondas in Parque O`Higgins, the ones in Estadio Nacional, the Chilean Week in Parque Padre Hurtado, among many others.
In all these celebrations you can enjoy dances, typical traditions, rich gastronomy, games for children and live performances of cueca and dance music for all tastes.
