The charms of the Hualpén Peninsula

Located 10 kilometers from the city of Concepción, Hualpen has more than 2,600 hectares with multiple natural attractions. One of the best known is the Lenga cove, located south of San Vicente Bay, of great scenic beauty. It offers a large beach of gray sand with waters suitable for the practice of all kinds of water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing. It is also famous for its local gastronomy, which offers the possibility of enjoying delicious fish and seafood dishes. In its surroundings you can go horseback riding, cycling and trekking. You can also visit the Lenga estuary, which corresponds to a natural ecosystem of wild birds, such as black-necked swans, cormorants, pelicans and taguas, among many others.

Another attraction is the beautiful Ramuntcho beach. Surrounded by forests of eucalyptus, pine and native trees, it has white sands and crystalline green waters that reflect the nature of the environment. To get there you have to walk a path where you will pass by two smaller beaches: San Juan - very interesting because in its rocks you can find several specimens of starfish - and Los Cuervos - famous for its caves. This is a protected sector where camping is not allowed.

Another place within the peninsula is the Pedro del Río Zañartu Park. This has a colonial museum built in an 1870's mansion. Here you can see a large collection from different parts of the world such as America, Asia, Africa and Europe. It is considered a National Monument.

Inside the Pedro del Rio Zañartu Park, we find the Green Lagoon, where various birds of the area such as chincoles live and has a great variety of flora such as reed grasslands, along with forest and meadows. In this area you can go trekking in the seasons when it is allowed.

Chomé Cove, a former whaling cove until 1981, has a climate that allows very cold waters - not suitable for swimming - but full of nutrients, making it the perfect habitat for many marine species. That is why one of the activities that can be done in this cove is diving. It is a very small place, with no restaurants but with rich cuisine where you can try seafood empanadas. It is surrounded by forests with abundant endemic vegetation and beautiful panoramic viewpoints on its spectacular cliffs, which allow a full view of the horizon. Other activities you can do are trekking, biking and jogging. There are more beaches within the Hualpén Peninsula as Rocoto Beach, also surrounded by forests with native flora such as copihues and cliffs, with beautiful landscapes and rocky environment that allows fishing for species on the shore, such as snook. Continuing along its path, you reach the mouth of the Bío Bío River, with black sands where the calm waters of the river meet the intense waves of the Pacific Ocean.

The mouth of the Bío Bío is an emblematic place in the area, located 20 minutes from Concepción and where you can do all kinds of outdoor activities, from bike rides to kite surfing. However, its turbulent waters are not suitable for swimming.

Other beaches worth visiting are Playa Los Burros, located south of the Chome cove, with white sands where you can see seabirds and the Los Burros viewpoint, which offers a complete panoramic view of the coast and the native forest. You can also visit Playa Las Escaleras and Playa Pinguinos Chome, a place where Magellanic penguins arrive. You can go to Hualpén during any time of the year. The way to get there is from the city of Concepción following the road to Talcahuano. From there, the entrance to the park is clearly marked. You can also access by public transportation such as buses.

Being a place of difficult access and large areas, it is recommended to take care of the environment and always bring back your garbage to preserve this beautiful and unknown sanctuary of nature.
