Description
With this full day excursion, starting in Arica and ending in Iquique, we will look into the past, touring several Geoglyphs, and visiting the abandoned nitrate factory-servicing towns of Humberstone and Santa Laura.
Itinerary
Departure from Arica to the Geoglyph Route, throughout the desert in order to meet the Chiza, Tiliviche Geoglyphs and the Giant of Atacama located in the Unita Hill, representing a Tiwanaku chief.
At the Pampa del Tamarugal Reservation, the arid landscape turns into a Tamarugo tree forest, tree adapted to dry and saline land. At the beginning of the last century, the abundance of the natural saltpeter enabled the enrichment of the coastal cities of the desert. However, with the invention of the synthetic saltpeter, dozens of towns were abandoned, two of them are Humberstone and Santa Laura; we will tour their streets, the theatre, the market and the church.
After that, we will continue our way to Iquique.
