La Campana National Park, full nature in the Central Zone

La Campana National Park is located in the commune of Hijuelas, in the V Region of Valparaíso. It has several places of interest very well signposted with instructions and maps of the trails that allow you to explore the park on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. Some of the trails are even more demanding and allow you to reach the summit of La Campana hill. This view is very interesting because it allows you to observe the surroundings from the Andes Mountains to the Pacific Ocean.

The three sectors into which the park is divided are Palmas de Ocoa, Granizo and Cajón Grande. This last sector is located south of La Campana and has a thicker forest of evergreen species adapted to the less humid conditions of the geography of the place. Here we can find boldos, bellotos and quillayes. In this sector there are camping areas, but they are not always enabled so it is recommended to consult before.

The Ocoa sector is the most attractive of the park due to the presence of Chilean palms. Here we can find more than 60 thousand specimens of the southernmost palm in the world. They are more than 30 meters high and are the habitat of diverse endemic fauna, such as birds and rodents that feed on their fruits, the coconuts. In the Palmas de Ocoa sector there are two trails, the La Cascada trail, which leads to a high waterfall at the end of the trail, and the Al Amasijo-Portezuelo trail, which leads to the center of the Palmar and connects with the other sectors of the park. You can also find a camping area.

The other important sector is called Granizo. Here we find two trails, one for climbers that allows you to reach the top of Cerro la Campana, with an extension of approximately 7 kilometers; and the Los Peumos trail, where in addition to reaching a viewpoint of the valley of Olmué we can observe the flora and fauna of the park. In addition to its representative palms, La Campana Park is characterized by its diversity of flora, as we can discover native sclerophyllous forest with species such as peumos and quillayes; lauriphyllous forest, which is found in wetter areas such as the bottoms of ravines, with maquis, pataguas, myrtles and cinnamon trees; different types of scrub and deciduous forest with species such as relict oaks. You can even see orchids, despite the dry climate of the park. As for the fauna of the park La Campana we can find culpeo foxes, pumas, guiña cats, quique, different rodents and birds and also condors and tucúqueres. Species of snakes and lizards, as well as rabbits and aquatic birds also make up this ecosystem, one of the richest in the country.

To get to this park you must first get to Olmué, from where there are public buses that take you to La Campana, a journey of approximately 12 kilometers. If you go in your own vehicle, all the sectors are well signposted. From the city of Santiago you can take the Panamericana Norte to Limache-Olmué, a trip of approximately 130 kilometers. You can visit La Campana all year round, although in winter the closing time is earlier. There are rates for adults, children and foreigners; and it offers the possibility of excursions and horseback riding.

It is important to remember that there are no services in the park, so you should bring your own supply of drinking water and snacks to consume during your tour. Do not forget to use sunscreen, sunglasses, hat and appropriate shoes, such as hiking boots. If you want to do a more demanding trail, we recommend the use of walking sticks. Remember to always move on marked trails and carry the park ranger's number in case of any emergency.
