Nahuelbuta Mountain Range and National Park
In the highest area of the Nahuelbuta mountain range, we find a natural park unique in the world for its large araucaria forests, millenary trees up to 2000 years old. This is the only place in the Coastal Range where araucarias abound outside of their habitat in the Andes Mountains.
Nahuelbuta Park is located in the Araucanía region and has multiple trails to hike, as well as camping areas and an information center for visitors. Its main attraction is undoubtedly the araucaria forests, although it also has forests of lenga, mañói, coigue and oak, along with other plants such as orchids. As for the fauna we can observe pudúes, chilotes foxes, black woodpecker, quique, among others.
It has several trails to walk, including El Aguilucho, Casa de Piedra, Estero Los Gringos, Cerro Anay and Piedra del Águila. The latter is the best known, as it rises to approximately 1,400 meters and has a beautiful viewpoint that allows you to contemplate an extensive landscape towards the Pacific Ocean, Mocha Island and the volcanoes of the Andes, such as Lonquimay, Llaima, Villarrica, Nevados de Chillán, Antuco, Sierra Belluda, Tolhuaca, Callaquí and Lanín in Argentina.
Another interesting trail is that of Anay Hill, which is 5 kilometers long and goes deep into the forest. It ends in an incredible viewpoint at 1450 meters of altitude where you can enjoy the araucarias and the best sunsets or sunrises.
In addition to walking its trails, Nahuelbuta Park offers multiple recreational activities such as trekking, horseback riding along authorized routes such as the Cayucupil Valley and the Nahuelbuta Mountain Range. You can also go kayaking, mountain biking and photographic safaris.
Due to the presence of Mapuche communities, while in the park you can also participate in some cultural activities such as the celebration of the Mapuche New Year We Tripantú, Nguillatunes- where they ask for abundance of crops and food-, play Palin, where you can share with a team and after the game enjoy the local cuisine and dances; and also listen to Mapuche stories and tales to learn more about the traditions and legends of these communities.
To get to Nahuelbuta Park you can enter from the city of Angol, Cañete or Antihuala. The accesses are much easier during the summer season because in winter it is necessary to use chains and four-wheel drive vehicles due to snowfall.
The climate in general is temperate and warm, with rainfall throughout the year and high humidity that allows the growth of an abundant flora. If possible, we recommend a two-day visit so that you do not miss any of its beautiful corners. In the surroundings of Nahuelbuta Park you will find Lake Lanalhue, with beautiful beaches and landscapes that we will review in the next post.
